This week presented a lot of information about both cultural problems and where we are heading in the future. I found it quite interesting that we are most likely to continue to gain more intercultural interactions and relationships in the future. I also learned a lot about prejudice, stereotypes, and racism in this unit. As a result, I began to ponder about my feelings on this issues. It was quite interesting that the text pointed out that stereotyping is a human-instinct. After I sat and thought about it, I realized that it is; everyone I know stereotypes.

This week our classroom discussion presented information about business, education, and health among various cultures. I learned that there are many different ways to treat an illness in every culture. It does not always have to be a scientific approach as I had formerly thought. Furthermore, I found it quite interesting that teachers and students alike function quite differently in the classroom in different cultures. Some teachers lecture the entire time, while others allow students to take part in hands-on or group based learning. The business world also presents many obstacles when it comes to cultural differences. For example, it is very hard to communicate with someone from another country when you are not aware of their language, religious practices, or business routines.

This week was very interesting as we discovered issues pertaining to nonverbal and verbal communication. As I posted in the class discussion board, I had a tough time deciphering whether or not proximity is obvious in a culture. The more I began thinking about this issue, I realized that everything I know in my culture, did not come obvious I had to learn it through social interaction. I learned that there are many differences in the way people express themselves in different cultures.

Unit #2 contained a wide abundance of information that has helped me understand communication in the real world. First off, religion is a huge deal in the world and it is of major importance to me to understand what each religion practices and what their beliefs are. Furthermore, it was very interesting to discover that there are a variety of things that shape one’s identity. I think my identity has been shaped most by my parents. Lastly, this week we learned about values and morals within cultures. I think for me my family, church, and schools have shaped my beliefs and values. The most beneficial thing I learned this week would definitely be the different religions. I am a Christian and I have, I guess, always thought my religion was superior to others. However, after learning about other religions, I am more open to other worshippers as well.

Already just in one day, I have learned many things about communication and culture that I had not previously been aware of. For example, I had not realized that communication is ongoing and that it has consequences. One question that I have pondered about in the past day or so is how a culture becomes dominant? If one particular culture has power over another culture, how can that particular culture ever be overpowered? I am very excited about learning many new things throughout this short semester.
